What is SPF?

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures how well a sunscreen will protect the skin from UVB (ultraviolet B)  rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn, damages the skin, and can contribute to skin cancer.

UV rays might cause damage to the skin, important to sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. SPF is a rating system that indicates the level of protection a sunscreen provides against the sun’s UVB rays, which are mainly responsible for sunburn.

The SPF rating is a numerical value typically ranging from 15 to 50 or higher. The higher the SPF number, the greater the protection the sunscreen offers. SPF measures how long it would take for the skin to redden or burn compared to unprotected skin.

Which SPF is Good for the Skin?

The American Academy of Dermatology mentions using sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher can be beneficial. In addition, the Skin Cancer Foundation says SPF 15 every day when you leave your house and SPF 30 if you are planning to be in the sun’s rays most of the day.

Sunscreen SPF and Skin Protection

SPF is a measure of protection from the amount of UVB exposure and not intends to help you determine the duration of exposure. If your skin typically burns after 10 minutes of being in the sun, applying an SPF 15 sunscreen will allow you to stay in the sun without burning for probably 150 minutes (a factor of 15 times longer). It is a rough estimate that depends on the intensity of sunlight, skin type, and the amount of sunscreen used.

For best protection, experts say using a minimum SPF of 15, applying the right amount of it (2mg of skin, or around one ounce for full body coverage), and can reapplying every 2 hours.

Using half the compulsory sunscreen only delivers the square root of the SPF. Accordingly, a half application of an SPF 30 sunscreen only can provide an effective SPF of 5.5! Furthermost, people under-apply sunscreens, using ¼ to ½ the required amount.

Can you wear SPF 30 every day?

Sun protection factor (SPF): This numerical factor provides information on the level of protection offered. Yes, we can use it. A minimum of SPF 15 or 30 recommend for everyday wear. When in the sun, it’s important to reapply sunscreen to exposed areas every 90 to 120 minutes, as the product label indicates.

It must reapply at least every two hours, respective to the water resistance of the sunscreen, and after swimming, sweating, sporting, and towel drying.

SPF 30

Whereas wearing sunscreen SPF 30 is better than not wearing any, if you have a choice, it’s best to choose a sunscreen with broad-spectrum UV protection of at least SPF 30. But, again, these references apply to people of all skin tones.
